We launched the Summer of ‘Cue restaurant promotion three weeks ago to a great deal of excitement from our fan base on social media. After all, who wouldn’t welcome an excuse to get out of the house and go explore new barbecue restaurants? Here’s a recap of the first four stops:
Kickoff: Southern Smoke Barbecue, Sampson County
Our first stop was in Garland in Sampson County to eat at Southern Smoke Barbecue and film the kick-off video. Matthew Register is a great friend of the pork industry and his Eastern-style barbecue is top notch. While he uses a vinegar-based sauce, he only cooks shoulders, not whole hog. If you journey down to his restaurant, you’d understand why. It’s a tiny little space, so shoulders make more sense than trying to fit whole hog cookers.
What you need to know: The restaurant is Thursday – Saturday from 11:30 until they sell out. Watch their Facebook page to catch additional dining opportunities through the food truck. The restaurant has no indoor seating, but there’s plenty of seating out back, so dress for the weather. Also, check the day’s specials to see what seasonal sides are offered. Everything I’ve ever eaten from Matthew has been delicious.
Road trip ideas: Visit Hubbs Farm for some good agricultural fun, drive through the countryside and find the barn quilts hidden throughout the county or explore nearby downtown Clinton, which is full of small town charm. Find other things to do in the area at Visit Sampson NC
