Empty meat case, except plant based

At a time when grocery store shelves are empty, it’s no surprise that farmers are considered critical infrastructure.

The federal government has issued formal guidance to the nation about the “essential critical infrastructure workforce” and the “special responsibility” to maintain continuity amid a national effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

It should be no surprise that farmers are deemed “essential” and “critical” as are all those who work in the supply chain to produce and provide our food. Health care workers and pharmaceutical workers are, likewise, understandably categorized as critical.

One of our hog farmers saw the guidance, and had an interesting thought about being labeled as “essential critical infrastructure.”

“Most farmers are too humble to even consider themselves such,” he said. “They are just doing what they love.”
